Saving Network Marketing
URGENT: I need YOUR input to help to create positive change that blesses the lives of millions of people in this industry!
I’ve been involved in some way or another in the Network Marketing industry for almost 25 years. Even in the 3 years I was retired from it, I thought about it almost every day. You see I have this sort of love – hate relationship with this industry.
I love it because at its best, it gives regular people the opportunity to start a business for very little up front investment and create financial freedom for themselves and their families.
I hate it because over the years, some confused marketers and corporate executives that are envious of other companies’ successes have created a boom and bust scenario pulling people from one company to another (usually the next latest-greatest deal) over and over again for their own financial benefit. Interestingly, what they do to others eventually gets done to them.
But the big question in my mind is; “how do we fix this problem so that it’s a win-win situation for all?” You see, at the end of the day the new guy or gal who is trying to learn the industry doesn’t make money or benefit at all in this feeding frenzy of company hopping. They never have the time to get established with one company and are constantly being fed hype that leads them to believe that success is dependent on something that is outside of themselves.
It’s only the people at the top of the line of sponsorship, who are the ones moving people from one company to another, that make a killing by putting them into a new compensation program and earning commissions all over again on the same people.
And it’s the new company (with supposedly the “right timing”, “revolutionary product,” “incredible compensation plan” (Is there any other kind? LOL)) who gets a windfall in new revenues from the sign up fees and initial product purchases of all those new people signing up “en masse” in their deal.
While competition exists in the traditional business world, you don’t see companies losing half of their sales force to a new company entering the marketplace. And the sad part is it’s not good for the distributors of most companies in Network Marketing for this scenario to happen either.
When I started in Network Marketing, I got involved in Amway, which was a 23 year old company doing $1 Billion in annual revenues at the time. I didn’t get rich overnight. I had a lot to learn and a lot of limiting beliefs and attitudes to overcome in order to succeed.
But by becoming a student of the Universal Principles of Success, which by the way were wisely promoted by the Upline in my organization in the form of books, audios and seminars, I did become a millionaire by the age of 31 (not overnight but 6 ½ years).
Furthermore, in spite of my slow start I did wind up making millions of dollars in the 17 years I was with them and helped others make millions too. By the time I sold my business in 1998, the company was generating $7.4 Billion in annual sales and was a 40-year-old company (which if you do the math it grew by 740% in 17 years or an average of 43.5% per year… not bad for a mature company that supposedly everyone had already heard of. No timing, no revolutionary compensation plan, just products that people use on a regular basis, a great culture and a great principle-based system! ).
The interesting point is that we didn’t build that business by cross-recruiting leaders from other companies. We built the business quite organically with new people entering the industry or people who had tried Networking before but had not achieved any great measure of success with other companies.
I don’t recall any instances where my organization or any other organizations brought over groups “en masse” from other companies.
What I’m saying is that success in this industry comes from having an intense desire to succeed, become financially free (or even wealthy) and learning the success principles that will make you rich in anything you do (including identifying and eliminating your root limiting beliefs). Today I teach these unstoppable principles to people who desire to become millionaires in Network Marketing (in any company)!
Most of the people you see jumping from company to company will eventually jump themselves right out of this industry and then will say it doesn’t work… even while others are clearly getting rich.
I’m not saying that it isn’t important to have a solid company with good experienced management and highly marketable products and good timing. These things are all important.
But just as important is that you resonate with the products and opportunity that you are marketing. It is much easier to promote a company and opportunity and sell products that you believe in than ones you don’t
Having successfully built several companies over the past 25 years (and had a couple of failures too) I can tell you that YOUR level of belief is the key.
First and foremost, your belief in yourself.
Secondly, your belief in the company, because if you doubt that the company will be around for long, then it’s really hard to recruit.
And third, your belief in the product – I personally find it impossible to sell what I don’t believe in myself.
I can tell you beyond a doubt that the couple of times I failed were because after I got involved with a company, I found out information that had been omitted initially which caused me to lose faith in them. And in a company I started, when the technology we were promised didn’t deliver as promised, I had a hard time raising more capital to keep it afloat and at the same time trying to keep the distributors motivated while being all beat up and with a waning level of belief.
I have some very powerful ideas as to how this situation can be solved in this industry in ways that benefit everyone that I’ll share with you in subsequent posts on this blog.
But before I influence your thinking with my thoughts, give me your feedback. I’m a big believer in the unlimited power of the mind. Many times people from other industries or experts in other businesses that are novices in this one can come up with some amazing breakthrough ideas.
Let me know what you think about the current situation in the Network Marketing Industry and what solutions you feel are best to bring integrity and ethics into an industry that may very well be the best way for most people to not only survive this recession but actually become rich during it and in spite of it.
But it ain’t gonna happen if people keep jumping from company to company (or as Loral Langmeir calls it “go widget shopping”) trying to find the golden goose!
Let me know what you think…

I joined Ambit after only one meeting, where you were the speaker. Barry NewDelman is my upline.
I believe in the company, completely.
I believe in the product, totally.
I also do believe in myself.
But, I have not done much with Ambit opportunity. The reason was a disheartening experience I had, after many weeks and months of pursuing others to work in this business.
I am in the construction industry, and like Barry, I am an architect and a real estate broker. We both know a lot of people who own a lot of things.
I searched for recruits, but I do not think that a guy that works digging ditches or installing plumbing is the kind of recruit I was looking for. I wanted people, many of whom I knew, with large rental complexes or condominium managers with large portfolios.
I know that this may not fit well with you, but this was my approach simply because I have these contacts. Rather than bring a lot of people in who were struggling, I wanted to bring in a smaller number who had control over large numbers of gas and electricity end users.
I brought an owner of 1000 dwelling units, apartments, to a presentation, where Brian was the presenter. I do not remember if you were there or not.
I had followed you advice and tried not to re-invent the wheel. I followed your lines to the word, and they worked on my neighbor and fellow property owner. He was so convinced of soundness of Ambit’s program that he had 2 of is property managers attend the same presentation. It was out near O’Hare where you had a lot of presentation.
After Brian was finished speaking, my recruit had a lot of questions. (This is a man who does not waste time. He has over 10,000 apartments in this country and is building a city in Eastern Europe.) He was firing away with a lot of good questions, and I suggested that he ask Brian, who was taking questions after the presentation.
One question was can I sign all my tenants up for gas. Brian told him he had to give them a choice. OK so far. After a few more questions, and after the question session was over, by way of wrapping up the eventing, Brian volunteered the statement, to my recruit, something to the effect “You cannot make any money with gas”.
I was stunned; my recruit was perplexed; he left and that was the last time we discussed Ambit Energy or the Energy industry.
Brian blew him away.
This, in hindsight was the turning point for me. I lost faith in…not Ambit; not you, but I lost faith in the idea that I was going to be able to put a lot of individuals together and earn anything to justify my efforts.
I worked hard to get my recruit to come to the event. He is very hard to tie down due to his many projects and properties. I thought that I could put multi-unit property owners and managers into my efforts and make a lot of money. But when Brian did that, I lost my motivation.

Richard, I truly appreciate how you feel. Things like this have happened to me before as well. The only thing is I think you might have misunderstood Brian. There are no “margins” in gas but there is money selling gas customers through Ambit. They pay the same for gas customers in Illinois as in New York (even as much as they pay for electric customers in New York). Talk to Barry who will be with me next weekend for the Millionaire Maker System weekend and maybe we can talk to your prospect and clear the air and get him on board. Carlos
Hello Richard, my name is Eduardo, one of your fellow Ambit consultants.. Your story is very similar to many stories that I’ve heard from people that just give up when they feel the first jab on the nose…Sometimes the only way to help people is to be blunt and clear, hopefully this messages helps you get back pursuing your dreams. As you know the business world requires people to be determined to win… are you? Let me warn you.. if you get offended by this posting.. I am NOT sorry, that is your problem.
Seems to me that you have not developed a strong “WHY”… I bet you don’t have a “WHY” statement, otherwise you would not be sounding defeated… C’Mon!! You are better that!!
By what you are saying, seems to me that you are conducting your Ambit business with your feelings and not with your brain… you mention that you feel “disharted” that you “lost you motivation”… also you are trying to say that you “worked hard” to get your prospect to the presentation (we are all working hard)…. Also, seems to me that you expected to make a lot of money in a very short period of time with no experience in conducting business…
Well Richard.. just based on what you posted, seems that you don’t have a solid foundation to get your Ambit (and any other) business going.
I recommend you start again from square one by developing your “WHY”… why in the world do you want to win??!, why in the world you want more money??…why in the world you will NEVER quit.
If you really want to see a change and do you business the right way read the following:

Yes.. this requires you to study, just as you did when you went to school.
I hope this thread helps you… and remember
Quitters NEVER win, Winners NEVER quit.

Carlos,
Thank you for giving us the opportunity to post our thoughts about how to help the Network Marketing industry.
Well, there is not much I can tell YOU about NM,… but I think I have humble opinions about what can be done in practical ways to get people going the right way in this business.
I am a believer of the opportunity that a good NM companies offer to people for growth and reach their maximum potential as human beings.
Also, I am an observer of the damage that irresponsible companies and irresponsible people had made to the Industry and to other people by selling illusions.
I also firmly believe that the human being is always searching for growth, and that if a person is given the right tools and learn how to use those tools, they can do marvels with them, even if they had bad experiences in the past.
In one word: TRAINING!!, high-grade, first-class training! ,just like the one you offer to your people..
I think that with Ambit we have the greatest opportunity to build this new Network Marketing era, where values, integrity are at the core of our people. We are all behind Jere in his vision… “To be the finest and most respected energy provider in the country” and this requires to have the finest and most respected people in the industry…
How to help the Industry in practical ways:
- Teach people how to do the business, just as they are thought in school… concepts, practice and homework, down to how to dress and posture. Lots and lots of practice talking and coaching.
- Develop leaders to spread this knowledge in a consistent way.
- Develop a “New Image” for the Network Marketing Industry.. where values and ethics are at the core.
I am all in with you in this quest.. I do have a classroom in Houston where I train my group how to do the Ambit business…and all the support I can provide to you will be happily delivered and also all knowledge I can get from you will be passed along to all the people we touch.
Thank you Carlos, you are a great master.
